Color purple과, 뿌리 시리즈를 보고 자란 나는 흑인 인권 운동을 다룬 책이건 영화건  큰 마음을 먹어야 한다. 
박소연 이사가 추천했기에 기꺼이 봤고, 역시, 메리가 판사 앞에서 한 말은 잊을 수 없다. 
사다리를 타고 올라간 캐더린이 백묵을 들고, 수식을 써내려가는 모습, 
IBM이 도입되면서 대량 해고 위기를 맞은 도로시가,  Fortran을 배워 동료에게 가르치는 것도 멋졌다. 
 
MARY (CONT’D)
Your Honor, you of all people should understand the importance of being first.
존경하는 재판장님.  모두 최초라는 중요성을 깊이 인식해야 해요.
THE JUDGE
How’s that, Mrs. Jackson?
 
MARY
You were the first in your family to serve in the Armed Forces.  US Navy.  
The first to attend University.  George Mason.  And you are the first State Judge 
to be re-commissioned by three consecutive Governors.
재판장님은 집안에서 최초로 미 해군에 복무하셨죠. 처음으로 대학에 가셨고요.  조지 메이슨 대학이요. 그리고 최초로 3연속으로 임명된 재판장이시고요.
THE JUDGE
You’ve done some research.
저에 대해 많이 알고 계시네요. 
MARY
Yes, sir.
네
THE JUDGE
What’s the point here?
그래서요. 
MARY
The point is, your Honor...
존경하는 재판장님. 제가 드리고 싶은 말씀은요.
Mary leans in.
 
MARY (CONT’D)
No Negro woman in the State of Virginia has ever attended an all white school. 
It’s unheard of.
버지니아 주에선 흑인 여성이 백인 학교에 갈 수 없었죠. 
유래없는 일이죠. 
THE JUDGE
Yes.  It’s unheard of.
그럼요. 전례가 없소, 
MARY
And before Alan Shepard sat on top of a rocket, no American had ever touched 
space.
He will forever be remembered as the Navy man from New Hampshire who was the first 
to touch the stars.
알란 세퍼드가 로켓을 타기 전까진 미국인 누구도 우주에 간 적이 없죠.
그는 최초로 별에 간 뉴햄프셔 출신 최초의 해군으로 영원히 기억될 겁니다.
The smallest opening in the Judge’s countenance. 
 
MARY (CONT’D)
And I, sir, plan on being an engineer at NASA. 
 But I can’t do that without taking those classes at that all-white high 
school.  And I can’t change the color of my skin. 
 So...I have no choice but to be the first.  Which I can’t do without you.
네, 재판장님. 전 나사에서 공학자가 되려고 마음 먹었어요. 그러나, 백인 전용 학교에서 수업을 들어야만 가능하죠. 
제 피부색을 바꿀 수는 없어요. 
그러기에 전 최초가 되어야 만 한답니다. 그건, 재판장님의 도움이 있어야만 가능합니다. 
Mary looks around the courtroom.
 
MARY (CONT’D)
Your Honor, of all the cases you’ll hear today, which one will matter in a hundred 
years?  Which one will make you the“first?”
존경하는 재판장님. 오늘 중재한 재판 중, 백년이 지나도 중요한 소송이 과연 무엇일까요? 
어떤 재판이 재판장님을 "최초"로 만들 까요? 
Mary stops talking.  The Judge is jarred.  He looks around. 
Considering his legacy.  Considering her passion.  Then quietly:
 
THE JUDGE
Only the night classes.
밤 수업만 가능합니다. 
 
 
Mary closes her eyes.
EXT. COURTHOUSE - MOMENTS LATER
Mary steps of the courthouse.  Containing herself...until she can’t hold it in any longer. 
 She screams.  She screams with everything she’s got.  Happy and free and full.
